Smoke-Free Housing Policy

This workshop series is for Hartford landlords looking to adopt or enforce a smoke-free housing policy on their property. The goal is to eliminate secondhand smoke exposure while protecting your property and creating a healthier city. Landlords are invited to review the four short video clips, download sample lease language, letters for correspondence, and Quitline resources. You can also contact the City of Hartford HHS Department for free signage to post at your properties and to receive certification to complete the modules.  Feel free to contact us if you have questions or wish to discuss at 860-757-4800 or This email address is being protected from spambots. In this course packet, you will find:

  1. Guidelines: Clear instructions on creating the policy, updating leases, and enforcing it properly.

  2. Sample Lease Addendum: A ready-to-use form that can be added to existing leases, stating the new smoking-free policy.

  3. Communication Templates: Pre-written letters, emails, and signs to help you inform residents and others about the policy.

  4. Education Materials: Brochures and posters to help residents understand the dangers of smoking and find support to quit.

  5. Compliance and Enforcement Guidelines: Tips on ensuring everyone follows the policy and what to do if there are any issues.

We hope these materials will assist you in implementing and maintaining a successful smoking-free housing policy. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us. We appreciate your commitment to creating a healthier living environment for your residents.
